Fifth Chakra – the Throat Chakra (Vishuddha Chakra)

The first of the three spiritual chakras

Located:  In the area of the throat.  It governs the thyroid, parathyroid, jaw, neck, mouth, tongue and larynx and lungs.

The Fifth Chakra is associated with faith and understanding, listening, speaking and expressing yourself from a higher form of communication.

Speaking and Listening are main aspects of the Fifth chakra.

Dr. David Simon offers the ancient wisdom of three gateways to cross before speaking:

  1. Is what I’m about to say true?
  2. If so, is what I’m about to say necessary?
  3. If so, is what I’m about to say kind?

Listening includes giving the other person your full attention, and waiting for them to completely express themselves before responding.

Color:  blue

Element : ether or space

Gemstones:  sapphire, blue topaz, lapis lazuli, aquamarine, turquoise

Imbalances in the Fifth Chakra can hinder your ability to communicate effectively, because of insecurity or fear of judgement.  You may hold back from speaking what’s true for you, which may inhibit the realization of your life’s dreams or purpose. You may become distrustful of your inner voice!  You may experience chronic sore throats, headaches, dental or mouth issues, thyroid problems, TMJ or neck pain. An overactive throat chakra can lead to rudeness, arrogance, negativity and condescension.

A balanced Fifth Chakra fosters confidence, and clear, concise communication.  You can be honest regardless of the situation or whom you’re communicating with.  You can be open and kind. You are willing to listen fully and then respond.

Positions to open and balance the Fifth Chakra:

Bridge pose:

Lie on your back on the floor with your heels as close to your sit bones (pelvis) as possible.  Exhale and push through your feet, pushing your pelvis off the floor. Keep feet and knees parallel.  Clasp your hands beneath your pelvis on the floor, and lengthen your elbows. You will be on the tops of your shoulders.  Think of pushing your pelvis up and your knees forward. Lift your chin slightly and lift in between your shoulder blades.  Breathe!

Plow:  Lie flat on back with arms at sides and legs extended.  You can place a blanket under your shoulders and back. With your abdominal muscles, lift your legs up and over your head ( can be bent at knees)  You are trying to get your torso to be perpendicular to the floor. Straighten your knees and slowly lower your feet to the floor over your head. If feet do not touch floor you can place a chair behind you and rest your feet on the seat of the chair.  Activate shoulders by drawing them down your back and together, to support your weight. Keep thinking of lifting the tail bone up as you breathe deeply.

Activities to open and balance the Fifth Chakra:

Chanting, singing, humming, reading aloud.  The mantra sound for this chakra is “HUM”.
