The Seventh Chakra (Sahaswara) The thousand petal lotus chakra.
Located : at the crown of the head
Associated with our enlightenment, the connection to our higher selves, to all beings on the planet and the divine creative energy of the Universe.
Associated with growing up in the sense that we escape the confines of our ego and are able to think of others, assume responsibility, and distinguish between what is real and imaginary.
The lotus flower, a symbol in HIndu and Buddhist traditions, represents beauty blooming in muddy waters or clarity emerging from murkiness. You emerge from the the confines of the physical body, ego, mind and intellect. You transcend your individual soul that ties you to the birth/death cycle.
Color: violet or white
Element: no element, no thought
Gemstones: amethyst, selenite, sugilite
An imbalanced seventh chakra:
You may not feel the joy of life
You may feel exhausted
You may have difficulty shaking bad moods and making decisions
You may feel detached from reality
You may experience headaches, mental or sleep disorders
A balanced, open seventh chakra:
Releases us from intellectual knowing and gives us a sense of serenity, joy and deep peace about life.
Gives us a sense of connection with all creation.
Receives and gives the energy of consciousness. Receives energy to sustain life and gives our personal energy back to unite us with the collective consciousness.
Helps us to realize that we are part of the bigger picture and thus helps us to live with gratitude, faith and trust rather than fear and anxiety.
Positions to open and balance the seventh chakra:
Corpse Pose
Lie on your back, legs relaxed and slightly apart. Draw shoulder blades down and under. Tuck chin slightly to chest to lengthen neck. Arms are at sides palms up or down. Breathe deeply and visualize deep purple light spinning, expanding and contracting in the crown chakra.
Half Lotus Pose
Sitting on floor in cross legged position, bring one foot on to the opposite thigh. The other foot will remain on the floor underneath the opposite leg. The goal is to have both knees relaxed on the floor. Bring hands in prayer position to the sternum. Breathe deeply.
Headstand
Kneel on all fours on a mat. Come down onto forearms and clasp hands together. Rest the crown of your head on the mat just in front of your clasped hands between your forearms. Raise your knees off the floor by slowly walking your feet towards your head. When your torso gets vertical, release feet off the floor and slowly straighten your legs. Keep legs and feet together and lift the belly button to the spine. Breathe deeply. You can gradually extend the time in this pose. You can also practice pose against a wall.
