The Second Chakra

The Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

“The dwelling place of the self”

Located in the lower abdomen, about two inches below the navel and two inches in toward the spine.

The second chakra governs the body’s liquids – blood, lymph, mucus, semen, urine and saliva.


This Chakra is associated with:

Our sense of abundance

Our sense of well-being





This chakra relates to our ability to feel creative, sexual and accept change.


Color:  Orange

Element:  Water

Energy:  feminine, passive, lunar


Gemstones to activate second chakra:  orange and coral calcite, citrine, Orange carnelian, orange adventurine


Gemstones to soothe an overactive second chakra:  Amber, amethyst, quartz, tourmaline


These stones can be placed on the chakra, or worn or carried with you.  


Imbalances in the Sacral chakra can manifest in feelings of isolation or numbness, and disconnection from your emotions or people around you. Behaviors may include being over controlling or abusive, as well as addictive behaviors.

If the second chakra is overactive, you may feel needy and lack confidence.  

Physical manifestations:  arteriosclerosis, varicose veins, menstrual problems, PMS and impotence.  


A balance second chakra leads to feelings of wellness, abundance, pleasure and joy, as well as a sense of connection and empowered creativity.  Physical manifestation: graceful, lithe, flowing body.


As we age and playing and creating with paints, crayons, scissors etc become less “acceptable” in adult society, our creativity takes a hit and becomes less accessible to us.  It’s important to find times to let your creativity bubble up in spontaneous ways. Drawing, writing, cooking, dancing… It doesn’t have to be perfect, in fact it’s better if it’s not!


Poses to activate and balance the second chakra:

Butterfly pose:  sit and bring the bottoms of your feet together, let your knees fall to the side.  You can do circles with your torso in this position, or fold forward over your feet.  

Cobra pose:  Lie on your stomach with tops of feet on the floor.  Place hands underneath your shoulders and slowly and gently press your upper body off the floor.  Leave your navel, legs and feet on the floor. Opening the front of your torso, breath. Careful not to let your shoulders sag down.  


Affirmation for second chakra: “I love and enjoy my body, I have healthy boundaries, I am open to experiencing the present moment and its abundance, I am open to touch and intimacy, I know how to take care of my needs.”
